Where Are the Birds?

 EmptyBirdfeeder

Bird activity at feeders is slower this month.

Why and where are they?

They're still out there, but right now there is a bounty of natural food sources available to birds. Insects, beetles, ants, and spiders aplenty. Seeds, berries, and fruits galore.
Studies have shown that wild birds still rely on natural foods for about 80% of their diet even when birdfeeders are present. When every tree and shrub is a food buffet, birds will visit feeders less often!

What should you do?

The birds will return to your feeders. In the meantime, here are a few tips you might want to consider to increase the number of birds in your yard.

  • Fill tube feeders and hopper feeders only half-way or less.
  • Keep seed in feeders loose and dry - give feeders a good shake now and then so seed doesn't end up in one moldy and unhealthy clump.
  • Take this time to clean a feeder or two, being sure to leave at least one foundational feeder up and available.
  • Install a bird bath. Birds need a dependable year-round water source for drinking and bathing.
  • Birds need to feel safe when feeding. Provide protective cover, such as special plantings, hollow logs, and brush piles.

And don't worry! As always, activity at feeders WILL increase when temperatures cool down and insects become less available.
